One of the most feared fighting formations of the ancient world, the Hoplite Phalanx enabled the Greeks to dominate the battlefields of their homelands and the near-East for hundreds of years. Each Hoplite was armed with the best arms and armour that he could afford - meaning that the wealthy would often take to the front rank, while the poor made up the rear ranks.
