Eowyn was dissatisfied with being ordered to stay behind to mind the house by King Theoden before the Battle of Pelennor fields, so she took up the alias Dernhelm in order to join the men in battle. Meriadoc (Merry) Brandybuck was also due to be left behind, he was seen to be a burden upon any rider having to carry him into battle. As the Rohirrim rode past Merry, Lady Eowyn snatched up Merry and together they rode to Gondor, they rode to war!
