Mary Read 75mm
Mary Read was born in England around 1691 to the widow of a sea captain. As her mother had had an affair after the disappearance of her husband, Mary was made to dress like a boy and pretended to be her recently dead brother Mark. This was so they would still receive financial support from her paternal grandmother, who was fooled by the charade. She then found work, still dressed as a boy, on a ship then later joined the British Military, eventually she fell in love with a Flemish soldier and then they got married and bought an inn together. After her husband’s early death she joined a ship which soon got taken by pirates and she was forced to join the crew. Eventually she was captured and narrowly avoided the noose by claiming to be pregnant, unfortunately she died not long after in prison of a violent fever.
