Back from the Brink
The P-51D Mustang is viewed by many as one of the most successful aircraft of WWII, but this unique design with a laminar flow wing still had plenty to offer after that conflict had ended. In 1950, by now having been re-named the F-51D when the U.S. Air Force was separated from the Army in 1947, it was called into action in the Korean War; airfields on the Korean peninsula were ill-suited to jet aircraft and the F-51D still had the necessary range and ordnance to roll back the years and do the job as a front line fighter.
